A great island does a lot more than fill the middle of a room. This Algonquin Highlands kitchen island is the hard-working heart of the space, with room for prep, clean-up and storage all in one place.

Palmer’s Woodworking built the island in a soft blue-grey with classic shaker drawers and doors. A white farmhouse sink sits right at the front, with drawers and cabinets on either side to keep dish soap, towels and everyday essentials within easy reach. A grey and white veined countertop tops it off with a generous work surface.

Behind the island, tall white pantry cabinets stretch toward the ceiling, and a recessed nook with lit open shelves makes a handy spot for the coffee maker and favourite dishes. To the right, panelled cabinet fronts give the refrigerator a clean, built-in look.

The mix of blue-grey and white keeps the room bright while giving the island a presence all its own.

From the island, you can also see the tall white cabinets and lit open shelves that line the back of this same kitchen.
