A fireplace is often the heart of a living room, and the right built-ins can turn it into the showpiece of the whole home. These wall units were made to frame a striking stacked-stone fireplace that rises all the way to the ceiling.

For this home in Algonquin Highlands, Ontario, Palmer’s Woodworking designed, built and installed custom base cabinets and floating shelves on both sides of the fireplace. The cabinets are finished in a soft sage blue-grey with classic shaker doors, a calm colour that sits beautifully beside the grey and tan tones of the stone.

Above the cabinets, thick natural wood floating shelves run across each wall, with wood tops on the cabinets below to match. The warm wood ties in with the rough-hewn beam mantel over the firebox, giving the room a cozy, rustic feel without losing its clean lines. One side is sized to hold a large TV, while the other offers open shelving for décor and seasonal pieces.

It is a great example of how built-in storage can be both hard-working and beautiful.
